Length follows the job
Ask what the reader will do with the book. Something read once, in exchange for an email, has to be finished in one sitting — a 4,000-word lead magnet that gets read beats a 20,000-word one that does not. A guide that teaches a process needs enough room for every step and an example per step, which usually lands between 8,000 and 15,000 words. A reference that readers return to can be longer because nobody reads it end to end. A course companion mirrors the course: one chapter per lesson, whatever that adds up to. A workbook is measured in exercises, not words.
Why targets beat goals
A word count is useful as a target while drafting and harmful as a goal while editing. The studio asks for a target of 6,000, 10,000 or 15,000 words and divides it across the chapters so each one has a size to aim at; the chapter word budget planner does the same arithmetic for any book. But when the draft is in, the question flips from "is it long enough" to "what can go". A chapter that says its piece in 700 words should be 700 words. Padding to reach a number is the fastest way to make a book feel generated.
Pages, and what stores show
Stores display a page count, estimated from the file, and readers use it as a proxy for value. The word-count-to-pages converter turns a word count into a page estimate for a given trim size. Do not chase it. A specific 60-page book on one problem outsells a vague 200-page one, and the review that says "short and exactly what I needed" sells the next hundred copies. If you want a longer book, add a second useful thing — a set of templates, a worked case, a checklist chapter — not more words on the first thing.

Is there a minimum length for Kindle?+
KDP does not publish a minimum word count in the pages we cite; it does apply quality and content guidelines, and very short books draw reviews that say so. Length is a reader question before it is a platform one.
How long is a chapter?+
For nonfiction, 800–2,000 words is a comfortable range: long enough for an idea and an example, short enough to finish on a commute. The studio drafts chapters around 1,000–1,500 words by default.
